Reflections

To write a process essay you have to use the present passive. Usually is/are with the past participle.
With some verbs the simple past & past participle are the same, but with other verbs there are differences, e.g. go, went & gone.

The process essays are similar to the procedure.
• We use same linking words in both essays e.g. first, second, next etc.
The essay structure is the same in both essays, introduction (25 – 30 words), the body (about100 words) and the conclusion (25 – 30 words).

To write compare & contrast essays you should have.
1. A brief introduction about the two things you are going to compare and contrast (in 3 to 4 sentences).
2. In the second paragraph you have to write at least 3 similarities of these two things.
3. In the third paragraph you have to write at least 3 differences about them.
4. In the last paragraph which is the conclusion you have to write which one you prefer and why.

The UAE & Brunei

Many people like to visit the UAE and Brunei because they are beautiful countries. Now I am going to compare and contrast the two countries.

Firstly, I’m going to write about the similarities. Both are Islamic countries and both have hereditary monarchies. In addition to that, both countries are very rich because of large-scale natural resources of oil and gas. Furthermore, both countries have national airlines, modern airports and well-developed infrastructures.

However, there are a number of differences. The first and most obvious is the geographical location. The UAE is in the Middle East whereas Brunei is a tropical country in the Far East. Another difference is the climate. The UAE has winter and summer, but in Brunei the weather is largely the same all year round. It also rains a lot more in Brunei and, as a result, the tradition is to build houses on stilts. Another difference is the currency, as dirhams are in the UAE and ringgits in Brunei. Furthermore, people drive on the right in the UAE but on the left in Brunei. Secondary education is single-sex in the UAE but co-educational in Brunei. A final difference is dress; people in Brunei do not wear dishdashas or ubayas.

Although there are many differences between UAE and Brunei they are beautiful countries. At the end I will say that I liked Brunei from what I have read about it especially the jungle and the weather there so I can't wait to go there and discover this beautiful country by myself.

How olive oil is made

Producing olive oil is a long and difficult process but if you follow these steps correctly in the right order you will produce good quality oil.

First, between September and December, the olives are harvested by hand or with sticks and rakes. Then they are collected on nets beneath the trees. After that, leaves and small stones are removed and the olives are run through a washer to remove any impurities before crushing. Next within 24-36 hours of picking, the olives are crushed by granite millstones. The step after that is that the olive paste obtained is layered on mats which are put under pressure from a screw or hydraulic press. Then the liquid produced is collected and put through a centrifugal separator to separate the water and impurities from the oil. Finally, after centrifugation, the oil is obtained.

As you can see producing olive oil is a long and difficult process, but if you want to produce a good quality you have to follow the steps one by one.

UAE & Brazil soccer

Comparisons
Model answer

Compare and contrast the overall play of Brazil’s national football team with that of the UAE. Say which of these teams you would rather watch and give reasons.

Most countries in the world have a football team, and Brazil and the UAE are no exceptions. I will describe the similarities and differences between the two teams, and say which one I would prefer to watch.

Like Brazil, the UAE is a member of FIFA which is an international body for regulating football. This means that both teams have eleven players, and substitutes are allowed. Both teams play to a system that has been agreed with the coaches beforehand. Brazil and the UAE defend when necessary but prefer to attack.

However, there are many differences in the style of play. Brazil plays at a higher level than the UAE and has won the World Cup. The former are fitter and faster than the latter and can adopt their style of play easily. This is because the Brazilian players have experience with teams all over the world while the UAE players usually play for local teams.

Although the UAE is my country and I always cheer for the football team I prefer to watch Brazil. There are many reasons for my opinion, the most important reason is that the Brazilian players are skillful and professional and they seem happy when they play. Another reason is that they play easily without any complication.

Reflections

I learnt a few things about how to write procedure essays:

1- We use the active voice, e.g. make, boil, turn, etc.

2- We use the inking words, e.g. first, second, then, next, after that, finally.

3- We write the essay in three paragraphs in about (150 words): the introduction and the conclusion between (25-30 words) for each and between (90-100 words) for the main paragraph.

I also learnt how to write narrative essays:

1- We use the past continuous to describe something happened while we were doing something else, e.g. I was doing my homework when something broke …

2- We use the simple past for the main form, e.g. I heard, we saw, they told us …

3- Sometimes we use the past perfect to describe two actions which happened in the past, e.g. when I arrived at my house my parents were already gone.

Catching a Thief

Last weekend I went to Marina Mall to watch a movie in CineStar. I bought a ticket and I had to wait one hour until the movie started so I decided to go to Splash to buy some clothes. When I was walking inside the shop I saw a man who was trying to steal another man’s wallet.

The man who was trying to steal was standing behind the other man who was busy with choosing the right t-shirt and he didn’t realize that the man behind him was trying to steal his wallet so I decided to warn him, but I stopped and decided to wait until he took the wallet to catch him in the act. Two minutes later I saw the man step back and I thought maybe he thought about it and decided not to steal the wallet, but I was wrong because three minutes later he came back and stood behind the man and put his hand in his bucket so I ran to stop him before he ran away. When he took the wallet and turned around to run away I caught his hand and took the wallet from him and gave it back to its owner and I called the police.

The policeman came and arrested the thief and the other man thanked me a lot for what I did. At last I was happy because I caught a thief, but I also felt sad for the thief and why he tried to steal because he seemed a nice guy.

How to Organize your Portfolio

Papers, papers, papers. Students often feel overwhelmed by the number of papers they receive from their teachers and it may seem that throwing them in the boot of their car is the best solution. However, it is actually quite easy to organize your class notes into a neat portfolio. Let me outline the steps.

First, find all your papers. You can look for missing papers on the HD1 website. You can also ask a friend and photocopy his papers. Second, sort your papers into logical divisions e.g reading, writing, listening. Next, put your papers into the different sections. After that, buy a binder and some colored dividers. Write section headings for the dividers and match them with a table of contents page. Finally, make a label for the side of the binder. Include important information e.g. class code, name etc.

As we have seen it is easy to make a portfolio. You will be proud of your neat, well-organized work.

Expedition to Sydney

In July 2007 I traveled to Sydney by expedition from Abu Dhabi Educational Zone with other students from all over the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. We had a lot of problems before we went to Sydney.

They put a supervisor for every ten students and our supervisor told us that our flight would be on Thursday July 5th so when Thursday came we went to the airport and our supervisor told as he made a mistake and the flight was on Wednesday not Thursday so we had to go back to our houses and wait until he booked another flight for us. Next day he called us and told as the flight is at 5 am next day but it wasn’t directly to Sydney; we would fly to Perth and then we had to book another flight to Sydney by internal airlines. The flight took about 11 hours. After we arrived in Perth we went directly to the internal airport by bus and booked a flight to Sydney. Unfortunately the flight was cancelled three times and we stayed at the airport for two days. The first time it was cancelled for bad weather in Perth and the second time because the pilot was drunk and they told us the third time was because there was damage to the engine. The fourth time we flew to Sydney without any problems.

Although we had a lot of problems before we arrived in Sydney I had my best holiday in Sydney.

Preparing for a Desert Trip

Preparing for a desert trip is an easy procedure, but if you don’t follow these steps carefully it will be difficult. I’m going to describe the procedure step by step.

First you have to check the tyres of your car and reduce the pressure in them. Second you have to take with you the first aid kit in case someone gets hurt. Next you have to put the food you need in a basket. After that you must take some light clothes because it’s hot in the daytime in the desert and also take with you some heavy clothes for the night because it will be cold. Finally you must take an extra tyre in case one of the car’s tyres bursts.

Preparing for a desert trip is easy. However, you must make sure you follow the steps above exactly or it will be difficult for you to prepare for this trip.
